Inside Boho Republic: Lana's Journey as a Business Owner in Bermagui - personal branding photos + interview

Meet Lana from Boho Republic (now Ocean People), it’s got to be Bermagui’s coolest clothing store. I spent an afternoon photographing Lana for my ‘Women in Business’ portrait series. I was gifted the most delicious golden light which is exactly how I’d envisioned this boho style shoot. I asked Lana a few questions about here business because I love hearing about the ‘how and why’ from all business owners, because running a business isn’t for the faint hearted!

1. What led to your current business and how long have you been operating?

In this area, you kind of have to create your own work if you want to live here in the off season. I've always loved fashion and had no where to shop here, so created my own retail store

2. Did you need to study/train/up-skill to help you get there?

Training - yes. If by training, you mean a solid addiction to shopping ;))

3. What are some of the biggest challenges you face daily in your business?

There are a few challenges, yes. In a town that has strictly seasonal trade, you've got to get creative in those quiet months. That's when you'll see me taking up random hobbies like crochet, weaving, or making jewellery.

I think the main challenge is trying to cater to everyone. This may be a small town but it is diverse. But it's good to be challenged. That's when you can surprise yourself.

4. How do you manage the stress of work? Do you have an outlet or something that helps to get you through?

I'm very much a hermit. I love to stay home and garden with my daughter if/when i have time. I've also been learning to surf which is hilarious but amazing for the soul

5. Three people we checkout/follow, in your field?

6. Business highlight, something you’re proud of.

If i hadn't followed my instincts, followed my gut, and my heart, i wouldn't be where i am. I've learned a lot. Not everyone is here to help. You have to be brave in business and it can make you feel vulnerable. But I've surrounded myself with an amazing team and I'm always striving to be different and better in my industry and provide a service and an experience to customers

7. What have you got coming up that you’re excited about?

I'm very excited that I'm one step away from being a completely plastic-free store!! (Once my new wooden coat hangers arrive). Once i made the decision to do it, it was quite easy and I'm stoked about it
