B&w 35mm film photography
I’m usually obsessed with colour—these days I rarely convert photos to black-and-white. But scans like these remind me of the velvety magic of B&W film.
I actually started my photography journey shooting in black-and-white when I was 15. I was completely hooked—seeing the world that way, spending hours in the darkroom developing film. It’s nice to be reminded that the spark is still there.
This series of photos were taken in late summer during the last of the school holidays and include some great swims wiht thekids and some lounging around home - perfect holiday combo, right?
The images above where taken at Wadbilliga National Park. It’s not far from where we live, but the drive is rough and long. Still, the icy crystal-clear river at the end always makes it worth it.
The landscape is eerie—kilometres of burnt forest, some areas still just blackened sticks, rocks, and black wattle. It feels like you’ve taken a wrong turn… and then suddenly, you find this quiet track that leads to the most stunning river.
I asked for the film edges to be included in these scans—I love how they highlight the rustic, imperfect nature of film. I can’t decide if I want to print one big or a whole series… maybe both.
The photos above were captured at home — quiet, in-between moments, mostly without the kids realising I was there. The light is likely from a single window, casting soft shadows across one side of their faces.
There’s something I love about how black and white film holds the stillness of these ordinary moments, making them feel timeless.
This last series was taken at our neighbour’s dam. I love the bright reflections on the water and the high contrast in these images — such a striking shift from the softer tones of the home series.
The kids launch themselves from a rope swing tied to a beautiful old gum tree, gnarled and partly hollowed out from being burnt in the fires — twice. The banks are edged with tall, stalky weeds that create such interesting shapes and textures against the water.
Thanks for taking the time to check out my personal photography work. I’m really looking forward to shooting some of my client projects on film one day soon.
